The trek started out on Tioga road at 8,600ft, climbed a total of 2,000ft, lost back most of that gain (1,300ft), and finished the day within 700ft of our starting elevation. Total distance was supposed to be 7.5mi's but wound up being 8.5mi's due to our miscue in finding the real trailhead.
No matter, we got to Sunrise High Sierra Camp around 4PM and expected to find a hiker's oasis. Surprise, remember that mule train we encountered (them going out and us going into the woods), well that, sports fans, was the last ranger of the season... They must have known we were coming and shut the camp down. The bad news was the facilities we'd planned on were closed (water, shelter, fire rings, cooking spots,...). The good news was they left one latrine open!!! And more good news was... no one else was around. We had the place to ourselves!
Here's sue, still able to smile after 8mi's with a 45lb pack. She and Kurt found a premo spot to hole up for the night don't you think? Now let's see, next above safety and shelter on Maslov's needs hierarchy is.... ah yes, food!
