Now Mr. GQ, Tom Boldt demonstrates mind over matter.  He has just recorded the fastest lap in open waters performed by a human.  Wait a minute, a true scientist would test to make sure he IS human before entering the feat into the Guinness book.

As I recall, Tom led the way into frigid streams on our last trek into Yosemite.  One could conclude a) He is a slow learner, b) He really likes to abuse himself, c) There are women around who need impressing.  You be the judge.
