Me again. Same spot, different angle... Hey, I get to be in as many pictures as I want. It's my Web site!
From this angle, Clouds Rest is visible in the background. It looks shorter than Half dome but is actually 1,500ft taller. You can imagine that one slip on the narrow path that goes over Clouds Rest would result in test driving the worlds longest sliding board, a thrill we studiously and successfully avoided.
Note also how Half dome is layered. Originally, Half Dome was one granite rock but through the eons and with the help of geologic pressures, it cracked into what we see today, exfoliated granite layers. Seems pretty stable when you're up there but appears less so to the eye.
