This shot is unique among all others taken of Vernal Falls. It is proof positive that Sue and Kurt can't read a map or follow signs... no surprise to most of use who know them. You see, the trail splits at Vernal Falls. We continue on the Mist Trail (a.k.a., the plan) while Sue and Kurt climb the Muir Trail to this view point. After the trip they try to tell us it wasn't a mistake but a calculated divergence in order to get this picture... bull hooey! They just flat out missed the turn. Ah well, their pain is our gain.
Vernal Falls is below Nevada Falls on the same river. The lack of full force water has a couple of side effects. First, it appears as a twin falls instead of a continuous sheet that we've seen before. Second, there's not much mist... And what is a Mist Trail without mist?
When the mist generated by the falls is dense, rainbows appear all over the canyon. I've even seen a circular rainbow, a very bad deal. There are no ends of the rainbow so there are no pots of gold.
What you can't see in this picture are the number of ferns which grow wild, supported by the mist generated by water hitting rocks at the bottom. The mist also serves to cool overheated hiker, at least for half a mile or so.
