Kurt surveys the scene a rest stop on the way down to Horseshoe Mesa. We are now down below snow level and the going is a bit easier with the ice crampons removed from our shoes. All we have to contend with from her onward are loose rocks and the pounding our legs take scrambling down over boulders and high steps.

The reward, as always, is an array of views beyond compare. In the distance is the North Rim. The Colorado River runs through the crack visible in the picture center. Perspective is very hard to grasp with scenery so expansive as this. The Tonto Mesa which is marred by the Colorado crack is approximately half way down from the rim. From this vantage point it is difficult to believe that narrow crack extends downward as far as the canyon wall reaches upward to the rim. One becomes a believer when standing at the junction of the Tonto Mesa and the Colorado's thoroughfare, however. We will come to that part of the story shortly.... Read on.
