| Rather than retrace our route down through the Red Wall strata which was
thrilling enough on the way up and would have been downright foolish on the way down, we
elected to contour around the top of the mesa to the other side where a creek had cut a
more gentle descent route. Along the way we ran smack into an abandoned miners' camp which
had not been disturbed for almost a century!! The miners' stove (mock hand warmer) was
embossed with 1904. We know from the guide books that mining ceased in this part of the
canyon around 1915. In addition to the stove we found pots and pans; an anvil (how did
they get that up here??); pick axe; coffee pot in near perfect condition; buckets; drills;
and chisels. What a remarkable find. It was surely one of the highlights of our entire trip. So we smashed everything and left... Naaah, just kidding. Had you heating up, though? |
