The night before we had spent considerable mental energy calculating the minimum number of items we had to pack down into the Canyon. The weather appeared to be favorable so we ditched the tents. February is always a thrilling month for predicting the weather in the Canyon. Last time we made the trip it was May and we were greeted with sleet and snow on returning to the rim.

If the gamble paid off, we save perhaps 3lbs each and as a further reward we get the near religious experience of sleeping under the stars. In spite all efforts, the packs weighed in at about 45lbs. The good news is they will be lighter coming out (up) on the last day. The temperature at takeoff was in the low 50's. Nighttime lows expected in the low 40's.
