Grandview Trail was literally carved out of the sheer rock face in many places. Parts were drilled and blasted away. Other parts, such as the one you're looking at, were hung from the wall by sinking steel rod into the rock and weaving rip-wrap (logs) together. The trail literally is suspended.

Being the sagacious elder statesman of the group, I let everyone else go first. The only thing worse than walking these precarious trails would have been riding a 'sure footed' mule... aaah but that is another story. Remind me to tell it to you sometime.
