Hal is making his way down the Horseshoe Mesa Redwall on the steep westward trail toward Cottonwood.  The arrow in the background points to Grandview Point on the South Rim where we began this odyssey two days ago.  Once again, pictures can't convey the scale.  It would be difficult to spot humans at the overlook even with binoculars... we tried without positive result.

We stashed water on top of the Mesa the night before so we wouldn't have to carry it up as we made our way out.  As it turned out, socking away that gallon was a real lifesaver.    You'll find out why when you read about day 3...

The first leg to Cottonwood camp is only about 2.5mi's from our camp site on Horseshoe Mesa... piece of cake.  But then the fun begins.
