Jerry Schad's book, "Afoot
and Afield in San Diego", rates this hike a five star trek. There are only
four others in his book that have earned this level of difficulty. We knew going in
that we'd be crashing through brush, hopping boulders, and wading through fast
water. Forward progress was going to be slow. The hike plan called for two nights and three days to cover the 12 miles from trailhead at Carrizo Creek and I-8 to trail's end at the the jeep road terminus. Schad claims it is possible to do it as a day hike but recommends two days to make the journey. Gearing for three days gave us a cushion should Schad miles and our miles be on different scales. The team of Andrew Carver, Serge Issakov, John Hart, Eric Busboom, and Gary Stowell left San Diego on Thursday, 2/11 and drove two vehicles to the base of Carrizo Gorge (trail end), where we made camp. The next morning (Day 1), we left one 4X4 and shuttled in the other to the trailhead. Believe it or not - and not planned by us - the trailhead is located at DeAnza Springs Resort... a "clothing optional" camp ground. From the trailhead our plan was to lightly test the five star hike rating by making a short three mile, within available daylight, to Camp 2. We made it, but not without some difficulty. |
The above map shows the trail taken (red trace), and waypoints (CG0 - CG3) spaced at one mile intervals. The waypoints were programmed into a GPS, a concession to modern times. There is some comfort in knowing where you are at all times. Each thumbnail at left enlarges when clicked. The pictures are in chronological order and have associated text describing the action.
