About here is where more than a few RR construction engineers could be heard saying, "Oooops."  You will observe the leftward lean to these timbers.  Well, about 100yds into the maw, the shaft is completely caved in.  A number of 16" beams are snapped like twigs.

You may think this was a tragedy, but it's all a matter of perspective.  You see, if this particular tunnel hadn't caved in somewhere in the 1930's, we wouldn't have the marvelous Goat Canyon trestle.  This tunnel circumnavigated Goat Canyon entirely.  Only a small trestle was needed to bridge the upper part of the Canyon.  After the cave-in, however, the only alternative was to span a 750ft wide spot further down in Goat Canyon with an industrial strength trestle.
