| The photographer (me) is standing just outside the final short tunnel
looking north at Goat Canyon trestle. The original tunnel, now caved in, empties
some 200yds to the right, outside the right edge of the photo. The trestle is 200ft
tall and 750ft long. It makes a gradual sweeping left turn, though this picture
makes it seem to take an abrupt left mid-span. Note also the two tank cars in the distance, one at track level and the other perched on the cliff above. These tankers were used to store water for the fire fighting equipment attached to the trestle. We couldn't agree as to what the fire danger was. Could it be vandalism, sparks from coal-fired locomotives, or perhaps brush fires that occasionally roar up canyons during fire season. Whatever the case, they were serious about the fire system. |
