| It's about 9:15AM and the crew is preparing to start hiking from the trail
head at Mortero Palms toward our objective, an abandoned train trestle about three tough
miles away. Andrew, Gary and Libbi consume a last civilized cold drink before heading up
the canyon (same direction the truck is pointing). Both Andrew and I have done this hike
before but this is Libbi's first time. The day is perfect. We hit a near record low temp
for the desert in June, a good thing too, since there is no water along the trail. Though
open to some debate, I believe it only reached a high of about 80 degrees. Our plan is
to stash a couple of quarts at the half way point for the return trip. Only one other
vehicle is parked at the turnaround even though this is Memorial day holiday weekend....
Guess everyone else expected it to be too hot. |
