| On a siding just feet south of the trestle stands this remnant of the
glory days of railroading. A tank car was permanently stationed here with a like sized
tank mounted 50 feet or so above on the hillside behind. The two are connected together
with a 4" pipe. Any guesses? WWRRROOONNGG! Time's up. They are part of a fire
fighting system protecting the trestle. On the platform above my head sits a diesel pump
capable of emptying these cascaded tankers through hoses located along a catwalk built 50
feet below the trestle summit. If the pump had failed, there would still be considerable
pressure generated from the vertical drop between upper tank and catwalk. Pretty cleaver,
these old railroaders. |
