| Now, every kid has dreamed of doing this!! There is an honest to gosh
manual RR switch located a few hundred yards south of the trestle... and it STILL WORKS!
With a little practice I could see Libbi jumping off a moving train engine, and racing
ahead to pull the switch, routing the train safely down the line. What do you think, could
she do it? We walked the track north and south of the trestle for a couple of hours.
Found some neat stuff, too. The tracks were dated. Some were from 1915 and others,
replacement rails no doubt, from 1928. A mile or so south there were a couple of boxcars
which have tumbled from the track and lie helpless on the hillside. We didn't have time to
adequately explore these artifacts before we had to head back. Darkness is not a friend to
the desert hiker. Cactus are awake all night in wait for the unwary. |
