| Just before getting to the trestle itself, one can see the
opening to an old tunnel just to the left (south side) of the
trestle. This is the original train tunnel that actually operated
for some years until and earthquake caved in 75% of its ~200yd
length. The old tunnel could not be salvaged so a new tunnel and a
large trestle were built to bypass the cave-in and bridge Goat
Canyon.
On close inspection, you can see that the tunnel opening is
15ft or so below where it should be. The cave-in sheared the
tunnel by that much at its entrance. The sound alone must have been
deafening, not to mention thrilling to the next train through.
