Goat Canyon

Just before getting to the trestle itself, one can see the opening to an old tunnel just to the left (south side) of the trestle.  This is the original train tunnel that actually operated for some years until and earthquake caved in 75% of its ~200yd length.  The old tunnel could not be salvaged so a new tunnel and a large trestle were built to bypass the cave-in and bridge Goat Canyon.

On close inspection, you can see that the tunnel opening is 15ft or so below where it should be.  The cave-in sheared the tunnel by that much at its entrance.  The sound alone must have been deafening, not to mention thrilling to the next train through.
