| Once on the old rail bed next to the trestle, it is easy to
see the distinct curvature of the structure. The original rail route
and tunnel, now caved in, is just out of this picture to the left,
up-canyon.
That's me mid-span, lending some perspective on how massive the trestle
really is. Note the ladders within the network of beams.
Apparently, these were used primarily for firefighting access to all
levels of the trestle and perhaps periodic maintenance. The first horizontal
level down supports a narrow catwalk and fire hose cabinets running the
length of the trestle. Permanently stationed tank cars on the siding
and on the hill above were the source of water feeding the piping and fire
hoses.
