Goat Canyon

Just as we finished lunch on top of the tank car, a group of unlikely hikers came down the tracks from the north.  Now the distance to the nearest road is about 7mi's and the hikers didn't seem to be the type to hoof it that far.  Their "secret" lies with this guy, Mike Redding, a member of the San Diego RR museum.  Seems he and others are trying to get the railroad operating again.  They came via "speeder," a hybrid road / rail car owned by the RR museum.  Mike is very knowledgeable about railroading in general and this stretch of track in particular.  I had many questions for him and during our brief half hour chance meeting, gathered a lot of historical background.  Very interesting.

In this picture, Mike is telling Jeff about how a tank car was raised to the top of the hillside, forming part of the trestle firefighting system.  Mike also indicated that the San Diego model RR museum has many old photographs taken during the trestle construction and at other locations along the track.  Someday I think I'll try to get an appointment to see them.  I did contact the RR museum about getting reprints... negatory!!
