| There is a livestock water trough at the base of Mortero
Palm Canyon, perhaps 200yds from the trailhead. Jeff is looking at
the date, 1940, inscribed on the overflow outlet. A pipe, still
visible as you climb, used to supply the water trough from a spring
underneath the Mortero Palm grove. The mystery is who built it and
why? I can't imagine grazing cattle anywhere in Borrego and I don't
know of any mining operation close by.
After exiting Mortero Palm Canyon, Jeff and I picked up Susan and Julio
who walked the track back to Mortero Wash and returned to San Diego.
The hike took the usual 8hrs - 3hrs out + 3hrs back + 2hrs exploration
time. It is possible to do it faster... but why? I recommend
this hike to any and all hikers up for a moderately challenging
daytrip. You will like it, trust me.
