The car caravan has made its way along the foot of the range south from Whitney Portal.  We are now starting to climb to our takeoff point at Cottonwood Lakes.  The view is eastward toward Death Valley on the other side of the far mountain range.  The desert floor stands in stark contrast to the alpine forest in which we are now traveling.  Note the switchbacks in the road below.  Lone Pine, CA is to the far left.
