The drive from San Diego to Lone Pine, plus consuming our last restaurant meal, plus shuttling the cars between trail's end and the trailhead, put us on the trail about 1:30PM.  We started the drive about 6:30AM this same day, Wednesday 11-Aug-99.  Our plan was to make the short hike 2.2 miles to Golden Trout camp for the first night.  ...However, the troop immediately demonstrated it's navigational expertise by completely missing Golden Trout and not even realizing its mistake until reaching the next trail junction where signs confirmed the goof-up.  We even argued with other hikers along the way who apprised us of the error.  No matter that they were already staying at Golden Trout camp... we still failed to believe that we were wrong.  This is NOT the way to build confidence for the upcoming off-trail, map and compass part of our trip.
