Just before this picture was taken, at about the point where the photographer is standing, we met a girl camping by herself.  She could not have been more than four and a half feet tall weighing in at 100 lbs max.  Amazingly, she had come over Crabtree Pass in the opposite direction form our line of travel, the night before.  She said it was "easy, a piece of cake, really.  Only a class 2 climb."  And further, "her mom had hiked in yesterday bringing food."..................................................................................................................................................................................................
.... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Ok.  Now there are only two ways to get to where we are standing.  Method number one is over Mt. Whitney.  This could be done by a guerilla in a couple of days.  Method number two was to come in from the way we had come, over New Army Pass from Cottonwood... This had taken us - he men of the mountains - two days with more than a little difficulty.  Where were these women when we were dating?  The mental image of this girl's hairy-chested mother dragging her knuckles up the mountainside bringing food was just too much.  From here on, not one of us was going to admit the trail was any more difficult than a stroll on the beach.
