Group one - you know, the group that follows directions well - is coming up the last part of the trail to Crabtree Ranger Station.  At about this point, group two - the one with alien-possessed compass - is just discovering their navigational error.  The method of discovery is pretty humorous.  Remember back at camp 2 (Soldier Lake) where we ran into another hiker from Phoenix?  Well he took the main trail to Crabtree Ranger Station while our team took the off-trail route through Miter Basin.  Wrong-way John and his minions ran into our Phoenix friend relaxing in Crabtree Meadow.  Now Mr. Phoenix is a low key kind of guy and just said, "I think Mt. Whitney is that way.  And if you want confirmation, there is a sign just 100 ft over there that says so." 

I'll bet this is when John and the guys put their heads together to concoct the wild compass story.  Come on, John, do you really think an MIT-led team is going to buy such a weak story made up by a couple of Cal Tech types?
