Along the Whitney spur trail there are sets of spires collectively known as "the Whitney needles."  Kurt, Hal and Tom are on one of the bridges between needles.  To their left is a steep drop framed on each side by sharp vertical rocks.  To their right there is also a view back toward Guitar Lake to the West.  Very cool.
